Essential RV Winterization Guide: Protect Your Investment This Winter

As temperatures drop, properly winterizing your RV is crucial to prevent costly damage from freezing temperatures. Whether you're storing your RV for the winter or planning to use it in cold weather, follow this comprehensive winterization guide.

Why Winterization Matters

Water expands when it freezes, which can crack pipes, damage your water heater, and destroy your water pump. Proper winterization protects your investment and ensures your RV is ready for spring camping season.

Step 1: Drain Your Water System

Start by draining all water from your fresh water tank, gray tank, and black tank. Open all faucets (hot and cold) and flush the toilet until water stops flowing. Don't forget the low-point drain valves. Find quality replacement parts in our Plumbing & Water Systems collection.

Step 2: Bypass Your Water Heater

Install or activate your water heater bypass valve to prevent antifreeze from filling your water heater tank. This saves you gallons of antifreeze and protects your heater. Check our Heating & Cooling section for bypass kits.

Step 3: Add RV Antifreeze

Use non-toxic RV antifreeze (not automotive antifreeze!) rated for your climate. Pump antifreeze through your entire water system until you see pink fluid coming from all faucets, the shower, and the toilet. You'll need 2-3 gallons typically.

Step 4: Protect Your Holding Tanks

Add RV antifreeze to your holding tanks and pour some down each drain to protect the P-traps. Browse our Sanitation & Waste collection for tank treatments and antifreeze.

Step 5: Exterior Winterization

Inspect and reseal any cracks or gaps in your roof, windows, and doors. Check all seals and caulking. Our Roof & Sealing products will help keep moisture out during winter storage.

Step 6: Protect Your Appliances

Clean and defrost your refrigerator, leaving doors propped open to prevent mold. Cover your air conditioner and furnace vents. Find protective covers and maintenance supplies in our Appliances & Kitchen section.

Step 7: Battery Care

If storing your RV, disconnect and remove batteries. Store them in a cool, dry place and maintain a charge throughout winter. Check our Electrical & Lighting collection for battery maintainers.

Step 8: Tire Protection

Inflate tires to maximum PSI, cover them to protect from UV damage, and consider using tire covers. If possible, move your RV periodically to prevent flat spots.

Step 9: Interior Preparation

Remove all food, clean thoroughly, and leave cabinet doors and drawers slightly open for air circulation. Place moisture absorbers throughout to prevent mold and mildew.

Step 10: Cover Your RV

If possible, store your RV indoors or use a quality RV cover to protect it from the elements. Check our Awnings & Exterior collection for covers and protection products.
