When Prayers Manifest
How God Answers in Installments
Prayers are not always paid out in one lump sum. Sometimes they come to us on a payment plan — little by little, step by step, our prayers continually manifest. And if we pay close enough attention, we begin to see that God has been answering all along.
"Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you." — Matthew 7:7
A Visit That Wasn’t in the Plan
Several weeks ago I found myself at Barnes & Noble Booksellers for no apparent reason. I genuinely had no idea how I came to be standing inside that store. But I knew — as I always know — that there had to be a reason. There are no coincidences in life. Every moment is an opportunity waiting to be discovered.
"The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps." — Proverbs 16:9
I thought to myself: Since I’m here, I might as well get a cup of coffee. And then something stirred in me — an inspired thought. I walked out to my car, retrieved a copy of The Apostle’s Recipe for Happiness, and brought it back inside. My intention was to place it on the shelf and photograph it there, as a way of cooperating with the manifestation process — making real what I was believing for.
I walked to the Christian section, set the book on the shelf, and took two photos. The moment I snapped the last one, a store employee passed directly in front of me, affixed an inventory tag to the left of my book, and entered my ISBN — 978-1593524296 — into the store’s inventory device.
I stood there for a moment, at a complete loss for what to do next. Then I quietly left the book there and walked out of the store.
"For we walk by faith, not by sight." — 2 Corinthians 5:7
Purchasing My Own Book
About a week later, my wife and I returned to that Barnes & Noble to see what had happened. I noticed the book was listed on the B&N website as in stock at the Smithfield branch — and sure enough, it was still on the shelf. I decided to purchase it myself. The act of holding a receipt for my own book, bought from a major bookseller, felt like a tangible confirmation — a way of anchoring faith to reality. I made the purchase and headed home.
"Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen." — Hebrews 11:1
The Catechism speaks beautifully to the nature of prayer as genuine cooperation with God’s will — not passive waiting, but active trust:
"Prayer is the encounter of God’s thirst with ours. God thirsts that we may thirst for him... Prayer is both a gift of grace and a determined response on our part." — CCC 2560, 2561
The Letter in the Mailbox
Several more weeks passed. I had not given it much thought until another inspired idea arrived. I decided to post the photo of my book on the Barnes & Noble shelf — alongside the purchase receipt — on my blog. I wrote:
"I could not resist purchasing my own book at Barnes & Noble Booksellers. That is as real as it gets! The power of intention and the strength of manifestation — all on one tiny slip of paper. Thanks, guys! The power of the reader is awesome!"
After posting, I went out to run a few errands. When I finished, something nudged me to swing by the office and check the mailbox — it was not on my itinerary, and I had no particular reason to go. I pulled into the lot, walked to the box, and pulled out a letter from Barnes & Noble Booksellers.
It read:
"In order to make your title, The Apostle’s Recipe for Happiness, available to any of our customers who ask for it, we want to stock your book in our distribution network."
On the same day I posted the photo and the receipt in faith — the letter was already waiting in the mailbox.
"Before they call I will answer; while they are still speaking I will hear." — Isaiah 65:24
This is how God works. Not always in the dramatic and the sudden — but in the quiet, accumulating movements of a faithful hand. He had been working on this long before I walked into that bookstore. The answer was already being prepared. I simply had to show up, cooperate, and pay attention.
"And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus." — Philippians 4:19
The Catechism assures us that God’s providence governs even the smallest details of our lives:
"God is the sovereign master of his plan. But to carry it out he also makes use of his creatures’ cooperation. This use is not a sign of weakness, but rather a token of almighty God’s greatness and goodness." — CCC 306
God’s hand is blessing us continually. His guidance is always pressing us forward, placing opportunities in our path to facilitate exactly what He has already purposed for us. Our job is simple — and profound: trust, act, and watch.
"Commit your way to the Lord; trust in him, and he will act." — Psalm 37:5
